In 2003, when he won the American League home run title and the AL Most Valuable Player award as a shortstop for the Texas Rangers, Alex Rodriguez tested positive for two anabolic steroids, four sources have independently told Sports Illustrated.

Rodriguez’s name appears on a list of 104 players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in Major League Baseball’s ‘03 survey testing, SI’s sources say. As part of a joint agreement with the MLB Players Association, the testing was conducted to determine if it was necessary to impose mandatory random drug testing across the major leagues in 2004.

When approached by an SI reporter on Thursday at a gym in Miami, Rodriguez declined to discuss his 2003 test results. “You’ll have to talk to the union,” said Rodriguez, the Yankees’ third baseman since his trade to New York in February 2004. When asked if there was an explanation for his positive test, he said, “I’m not saying anything.”

Phone messages left by SI for players’ union executive director Donald Fehr were not returned.

Though MLB’s drug policy has expressly prohibited the use of steroids without a valid prescription since 1991, there were no penalties for a positive test in 2003. The results of that year’s survey testing of 1,198 players were meant to be anonymous under the agreement between the commissioner’s office and the players association. Rodriguez’s testing information was found, however, after federal agents, armed with search warrants, seized the ‘03 test results from Comprehensive Drug Testing, Inc., of Long Beach, Calif., one of two labs used by MLB in connection with that year’s survey testing. The seizure took place in April 2004 as part of the government’s investigation into 10 major league players linked to the BALCO scandal — though Rodriguez himself has never been connected to BALCO.

The list of the 104 players whose urine samples tested positive is under seal in California. However, two sources familiar with the evidence that the government has gathered in its investigation of steroid use in baseball and two other sources with knowledge of the testing results have told Sports Illustrated that Rodriguez is one of the 104 players identified as having tested positive, in his case for testosterone and an anabolic steroid known by the brand name Primobolan. All four sources spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the evidence.

Primobolan, which is also known by the chemical name methenolone, is an injected or orally administered drug that is more expensive than most steroids. (A 12-week cycle can cost $500.) It improves strength and maintains lean muscle with minimal bulk development, according to steroid experts, and has relatively few side effects. Kirk Radomski, the former New York Mets clubhouse employee who in 2007 pleaded guilty to illegal distribution of steroids to numerous major league players, described in his recent book, Bases Loaded: The Inside Story of the Steroid Era in Baseball by the Central Figure in the Mitchell Report, how players increasingly turned to drugs such as Primobolan in 2003, in part to avoid detection in testing. Primobolan is detectable for a shorter period of time than the steroid previously favored by players, Deca-Durabolin. According to a search of FDA records, Primobolan is not an approved prescription drug in the United States, nor was it in 2003. (Testosterone can be taken legally with an appropriate medical prescription.)

Rodriguez finished the 2003 season by winning his third straight league home run title (with 47) and the first of his three MVP awards.

Because more than 5% of big leaguers had tested positive in 2003, baseball instituted a mandatory random-testing program, with penalties, in ‘04. According to the 2007 Mitchell Report on steroid use in baseball, in September 2004, Gene Orza, the chief operating officer of the players’ union, violated an agreement with MLB by tipping off a player (not named in the report) about an upcoming, supposedly unannounced drug test. Three major league players who spoke to SI said that Rodriguez was also tipped by Orza in early September 2004 that he would be tested later that month. Rodriguez declined to respond on Thursday when asked about the warning Orza provided him.

When Orza was asked on Friday in the union’s New York City office about the tipping allegations, he told a reporter, “I’m not interested in discussing this information with you.”

Anticipating that the 33-year-old Rodriguez, who has 553 career home runs, could become the game’s alltime home run king, the Yankees signed him in November 2007 to a 10-year, incentive-laden deal that could be worth as much as $305 million. Rodriguez is reportedly guaranteed $275 million and could receive a $6 million bonus each time he ties one of the four players at the top of the list: Willie Mays (660), Babe Ruth (714), Hank Aaron (755) and Barry Bonds (762), and an additional $6 million for passing Bonds. In order to receive the incentive money, the contract reportedly requires Rodriguez to make extra promotional appearances and sign memorabilia for the Yankees as part of a marketing plan surrounding his pursuit of Bonds’s record. Two sources familiar with Rodriguez’s contract told SI that there is no language about steroids in the contract that would put Rodriguez at risk of losing money.

Arguments before an 11-judge panel in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in Pasadena are ongoing between government prosecutors and the players’ association over the government’s seizure of the test results from the Long Beach lab. The agents who collected the material had a search warrant only for the results for the 10 BALCO-linked players. Attorneys from the union argue that the government is entitled only to the results for those players, not the entire list. If the court sides with the union, federal authorities may be barred from using the positive survey test results of non-BALCO players such as Rodriguez in their ongoing investigations.

Phoenix Suns guard Jason Richardson was accused by police of driving under the influence of alcohol when he was stopped Dec. 21 by a Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community officer.

Richardson was stopped at 2:48 a.m. at the Loop 101 freeway and Thomas Road, according to citation filed at West Mesa Justice Court. He also was accused of failure to drive in one lane and speeding.

The ticket said the officer clocked Richardson traveling 65 mph in a 55 mph zone as he headed south on the freeway in a white 2008 Mercedes Benz.

Richardson, 26, was cited and released pending a preliminary appearance that is yet to be scheduled. Larry Kazan, a defense attorney who specializes in DUI cases, has notified the court that he will represent Richardson.

Are you kidding me, another NBA guy accused of DUI?!?! Look how Barkley’s DUI was released to the public the same morning he got caught, while Richardsons has taken almost two weeks to surface. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Charles Barkley was arrested on suspicion of drinking and driving early Wednesday.

An officer with a law enforcement task force that targets drunken driving saw the former NBA star run a stop sign around 1:30 a.m., said Gilbert police Lt. Eric Shuhandler.

Barkley declined to submit to a breath test but was given a blood test. The results weren’t immediately available.

After Barkley was processed, he was cited and released. He left in a cab, Shuhandler said.

Shuhandler said there was nothing remarkable about the 45-year-old Barkley’s arrest and that it is customary to release people after they’ve been arrested on suspicion of DUI.

“There was nothing unusual about how he was taken into custody,” Shuhandler said. “He was treated exactly like we treat anybody else.”

Barkley was arrested in Scottsdale’s Old Town area, one of the trendiest spots in the Phoenix metro area.

A television commentator for NBA games, the former Auburn player was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame last month.

He played 16 NBA seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets, and played on the 1992 and 1996 Olympic teams. Barkley was an 11-time NBA All-Star and league MVP in 1993.

Selected one the NBA’s 50 greatest players in 1996, he was inducted into the 2006 Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Detroit Lions released a statement Monday stating they would be interested in bringing in Muntadhar al-Zeidi, the shoe throwing assailant of President Bush, for a tryout for next seasons squad. Al-Zeidi’s trial on charges of assaulting a foreign leader is scheduled to begin Dec. 31 and a conviction would carry a sentence of up to two years in prison. The prime minister’s office said last week that al-Zeidi had written a letter of apology and asked al-Maliki to recommend a pardon. If pardoned, Lions owner William Clay Ford said he would look at al-Zeidi as possible competition to current QB Dan Orlovsky. “He had great form on his throw, and had a good release point, also his velocity was great, but his accuracy could use a little help,” Ford said when asked about al-Zeidi. When questions were raised about al-Zeidi’s size and ability to handle pressure, Ford said, “Look at the way he was able to get the second shoe thrown with security and Secret Service men in his face, and it took like 4 guys to take him down, that shows a lot of heart and determination.” This gives Lions fans something to look forward to, on the brink of the first ever, Defeated Season. Attenpts to reach al-Zeidi were unsuccessful as prision officials said he was, “tied up” and “unable to comment at this time.”

Moves like this are what make the Lions great. I think they may still have Matt Millen running things on the DL out there in Detroit. I hear this al-Zeidi guy is the Mike Vick of the Middle East…hope he gets a pardon, the Lions sure could use the help.

11 year NBA veteran Cuttino Mobley is retiring because of a heart condition that was found during his check up when he was traded to the New York Knicks. Mobley during 11 seasons averaged 16 points a game and was a sharpshooter from the 3 point line. Here are comments about Mobley from great buddy and former teammate Steve Francis : “I can’t put it into words. Playing with a guy, living with a guy, just knowing that every day when I wake up that’s something I can count on, that I’m going to be in practice or in a game with Cuttino. Him not being here is going to be tough for me. I don’t know what I’m going to wake up for.” In all fairness it must be said those comments are after Mobley got traded from the Houston Rockets but i think they paint a picture of what Mobley means to a team or at least Steve Francis.

I remember hearing about Cuttino Mobley’s place getting robbed back in 2006. He lost $500,000 in cash and some of Steve Francis’s jewlery. What is Stevie “Franchise’s” jewels doing at your apartment …. ?? In any case good luck to you in whatever life (lifestyle) you choose after basketball.

Four-time Pro Bowl and 2-time All-Pro selection, and owner of the record label Outlook Music Co., Trevor Pryce has called out music mogul T-Pain live on the radio. While being interviewed on the popular sports radio show, The Jim Rome Show, Trevor Pryce was discussing how he was leaving the record industry to get into movies. Trevor Pryce said he was getting out of music because, “Any idiot with a keyboard and computer can make a T-Pain song”. Jim Rome was blown away by this statement, and repeated Pryce’s words multiple times. Pryce and T-Pain have a brief history of working together after, in 2007, Outlook Music artist Suave Smooth released a song featuring T-Pain. T-Pain was not available for comment.

Trevor Pryce is right…music isn’t about talent anymore…it’s about a tight beat and catchy hook. Look, if artists like Soulja Boy can make a million, pretty much anyone can. It’s about time someone called these artists out. One thing tho…T-Pain is the $hit and has been doing it for a minute…wonder how he is going to respond??

Take the KC Chiefs getting 6 points at home against the San Diego Chargers. It’s a division game and the Chargers though mathematically alive are pretty much out of playoff contention. CHIEFS + 6

Take the Miami Dolphins giving 6.5 at home against the San Francisco 49ers. It is rumored that Frank Gore did not make the team flight to Miami because of last weeks injury and that Deshaun Foster will start at running back. Miami is in a 3 way tie for the division and will need to keep pace. Parcels will have the Dolphins ready. DOLPHINS - 6.5

Take the Dallas Cowboys giving up 2.5 at home against the NY Giants. Yes the Cowboys are internally feuding but this is the make or break game for a Super Bowl run. Marion Barber is banged up for the Boy’s but the Giants are without CHEDDA BOB aka Plaxico Burress (as Miles Cyrus says) and Brandon Jacobs. Jerry Jones is betting on his Boys and you should too. The NY Jets Buffalo Bills game in NY is a tough line to call in my opinion. The odds makers have the Jets a 7.5 favorite. It is a division game and the Jets haven’t played too well as of late. If you want to make money on this game take the Jets, who must win to keep pace in the division race with the Dolphins and Patriots, with the money line winning the game straight up. On Monday night take the Philadelphia Eagles at home against the Cleavland Browns giving up 14. The Browns at this point might be the worst team in the NFL.
